Many batteries contain heavy metals such as lead, nickel and cadmium or corrosive materials such as potassium hydroxide and sulphuric acid. The European Directive has classified batteries into three main groups, namely automotive, industrial and portable. Automotive batteries have primarily lead-acid chemistry whereas industrial batteries and portable batteries can have various chemistries.
