The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012<\/a>\u00a0came into force in April 2012, yet still asbestos is the biggest worldwide occupational killer. Every\u00a0week twenty tradesmen (joiners, plumbers and electricians) die\u00a0of complications\u00a0resulting from contact with asbestos.<\/p>\n There are two varieties and three \u2018colours\u2019 of asbestos: chrysotile \u2013 white (hydrophilic) and amosite \/ grunerite \u2013 brown, crocidolite \u2013 blue (hydrophobic).\u00a0These different types are not necessarily distinguishable by\u00a0colour as they could be mixed with other materials which mask the appearance.<\/p>\n With asbestos there may not be any recognisable warning signs, and\u00a0there\u00a0may\u00a0be undiscovered asbestos in buildings your employees are\u00a0working in currently. The risk is higher if the construction of the building pre-dates the year\u00a02000. Ask yourself, would you spot an asbestos gasket on an old engine, within cement pipes or recognise a fuse board that contains asbestos?
